We miss the meaning of the incarnation by not understanding it's immensity. We don't really misunderstand it, as much as we under-understand it. We don't get how big it really is. The incarnation was not simply a 30-year experiment, a one-shot incursion by God into human history. This under-understanding always uses the past tense for the incarnation. When we think of the incarnation as something that happened, rather than something that is happening, we demonstrate the under-understanding of the most important concept ever initiated.
When we begin to right-size our understanding of the incarnation, every home becomes a church, every child is the Christ-child, and all food and drink become the sacraments. What does it mean when the scripture says that we are the body of Christ? God's presence in the world today depends on us. We have to keep God present in the world in the same way that Jesus did.
