What do we mean when we refer to heaven? For that matter, what do we mean when we refer to hell?
During the six weeks of this sermon series, we will uncover some myths and fuzzy thinking that come at us from all directions regarding these two questions. We will consider what the Bible has to say about the afterlife. We will discover how the conceptual idea of heaven has developed and where it has come off the tracks. We will examine some of the near-death experiences that many people have experienced and written about. We will look at some of the real effects this confusion has on how we think about heaven, and how we think about God.
Much of the Newer Testament centers around the idea of hope. Much of that hope is based not only on the beautiful life that Jesus prototyped for us, but also on the way that he defeated death. If he defeated death, why do people still die? What happens to them after they die and why are we so afraid of death's implications? If there judgement after death and if so, what kind of judgement will there be? Are there other lives after the one we are now living or is this all there is? What about the idea of purgatory and second chances after this life?
Together we will sharpen our thinking about the afterlife. Our intention is that our faith will be strengthened with the hope that comes from doing the work necessary to uncover the truth about heaven. Many of these ideas are based on the character of God, and so, we will also look at the way that Jesus presents God to us in the Newer Testament.
